Ohio city to update traffic signals system-wide
Thursday, 12 January 2012 17:43

According to the Solon Times, officials in Solon, Ohio, are in the process of updating traffic signals in the city, and are conducting surveys in order to develop effective signal timing patterns as well as determine the most beneficial placement of traffic lights at intersections throughout the city. Of particular concern to local engineers is the height of the traffic signals. Some officials suspect that ordered utility poles may be too short.

Cities that upgrade traffic signals across a number of intersections, as is the case in Solon, often choose to integrate signal synchronization technology, adaptive signal control or some other intelligent traffic solution. Traffic signal equipment that can communicate effectively with cars on the road or other traffic signals at surrounding intersections can effectively manage many different types of traffic flow. This technology is particularly effective in cities and towns that see a lot of commuter traffic, because patterns are significantly different during the morning and evening commuting hours than during the day and on weekends.

In all, the city expects to upgrade some 46 traffic signals in Solon, and the source estimates the total cost of the project will be around $7.4 million, 20 percent of which will have to be paid for by the city.
