Ohio city to synchronize traffic signals
Wednesday, 18 January 2012 17:22

Officials in Findlay, Ohio, recently announced that the results of a traffic study warranted a traffic signal upgrade along Tiffin Avenue, a road that has seen significant volume problems resulting in backups, according to WFIN. The source notes that traffic signals between Londonderry Drive and County Road 236 will be outfitted with signal synchronization technology, allowing them to communicate and provide motorists with  smoother drive times by timing green light patterns to alleviate high volumes.

Signal synchronization technology minimizes the time drivers spend idling at red lights, reducing both commuting times and carbon emissions. Idling engines are one of the single largest contributors to carbon emissions and urban pollution, and many federal aid initiatives support projects that improve air quality like signal synchronization or adaptive signal control.

According to the source, the synchronization project comes on the heels of a three year, $100,000 traffic study that assessed the traffic problems on Tiffin Avenue. Officials said an Ohio Department of Transportation grant would cover about 90 percent of the cost to install signal synchronization technology, and the city would cover the additional costs.
