Overview

The City of North Little Rock overcame traffic challenges and improved efficiency by transitioning to McCain ATC Cabinets. The transition led to enhanced travel times, data collection, and communication for future traffic management.

Location

North Little Rock is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, located on the north shore of the Arkansas River. The population is approximately 64,500, making it the seventh-most populous city in Arkansas. There is approximately 54.6 square miles of diverse neighborhoods, lakes, parks and walking trails. In addition to downtown, the area surrounding the McCain Boulevard exit off the interstate provides a shopping mecca for visitors and residents.

The Challenge

The City of North Little Rock faced many challenges with their existing traffic system. One aspect they aimed to improve was minimizing the need for frequent call-outs to cabinets caused by faulty wiring, a process that demanded significant time for diagnosis and resolution. They also felt their current traffic system was not adequately moving traffic through the busiest and most traveled corridor in the city. Frustrated by ongoing issues and the desire to invest in a central intersection management system, they sought out to find a new solution.

Solution

In the fall of 2022, the City partnered with SWARCO McCain and Pinkley Sales and decided to replace the NEMA cabinets with McCain ATC Cabinets, marking some of the first ATC Cabinets installed in Arkansas. The installation also included McCain ATC eX2 NEMA Controllers along with Omni eX® Intersection Control Software and MyCity TMS1 software. The solution provided the city with the feature set necessary to optimize and coordinate McCain Boulevard.

The Results

SWARCO McCain, along with their distribution partner Clark Transportation Solutions, completed a post-installation analysis in October 2022. The analysis used the high-resolution, SPM data collected through the newly implemented MyCity Adaptive and discovered that enhanced system yielded the following results:3
