Springfield and MoDOT partner with SWARCO McCain to improve urban mobility, setting the benchmark for modern traffic management solutions.

Springfield, Missouri

Overview

In a collaborative effort, the City of Springfield and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) partnered with SWARCO McCain to revitalize its outdated traffic management system. The new system includes SWARCO McCain’s MyCity TMS1 along with McCain ATC eX® 2070 Controllers running McCain Omni eX® Intersection Control Software, transforming Springfield’s intricate network of intersections while preparing the city for future innovation.

Location

Unlike many urban cities, Springfield’s traffic predominantly runs through arterial streets instead of freeways. Springfield is near the nation’s geographic and population centers with major thoroughfares, including Interstate 44, U.S. 65, U.S. 60, U.S. 160, and Missouri 13, all leading directly into the city. The City of Springfield has a history as a central railroad hub and is the birthplace of historic Route 66.

The Challenge

The City of Springfield and several intersections in MO’s Southwest Districts were experiencing transportation issues and traffic congestion. Its arterial roads were often plagued with slow-moving traffic, extending travel times for many motorists. The city’s outdated system affected daily commutes and presented safety complications due to the lack of real-time monitoring and collection of data.

Solution

SWARCO McCain installed and implemented its innovative MyCity TMS through Springfield’s traffic server, offering features such as adaptive signal control technology and real-time data reports through a user-friendly interface. The project also included supplying and configuring 300 McCain ATC eX 2070 Controllers running McCain Omni eX Intersection Control Software, creating 268 graphical displays, providing 268 timing conversions, and conducting a comprehensive timing plan analysis. Additionally, SWARCO McCain provided local and central software training with ongoing communication support.

Key Deliverables of MyCity TMS

  • Real-time data provisioning
  • System monitoring and control
  • Robust analytics and in-depth data insights
  • Informed decision-making for management

Benefits of McCain ATC eX 2070 Controllers

  • Open architecture ensures enhanced adaptability
  • Regulate complex intersections
  • Multiple communication options for interconnected intersections

The Results

With the launch of MyCity TMS, Springfield received a notable upgrade in its remote monitoring capabilities. Now, the City of Springfield immediately receives notifications for critical events. Moreover, the McCain ATC eX 2070 Controller’s advanced features enrich Springfield’s TMC in traffic analysis, paving the way for increasing safety and optimizing traffic flow at all intersections.

Springfield's Future Planning

The City of Springfield and MoDOT jointly operate and maintain a closed circuit in traffic monitoring and management through the Traffic Management Center (TMC). Springfield and MoDOT’s future traffic planning, while following the TMC’s jurisdiction, is to implement additional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in MoDOT’s Southwest District and other local regional hubs.
