The San Diego autonomous vehicle proving grounds were designated as one of ten proving grounds in the U.S. by the U.S. Department of Transportation. VISTA, California, October 31, 2017 – McCain Inc., a leader in the supply of advanced transportation solutions for safety and mobility, today announced its participation and support of the first Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) trials in the U.S. Launched by AT&T, Ford, Nokia, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and in coordination with the City of Chula Vista and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), the testing is expected to take place at the automated vehicle proving grounds in San Diego.

The San Diego autonomous vehicle proving grounds were designated as one of ten proving grounds in the U.S. by the U.S. Department of Transportation. One objective of the trials is to demonstrate the potential of C-V2X technologies, and their ability to improve automotive safety, support a path towards automated driving, and to drive improved traffic efficiency. The trials also aim to demonstrate to automakers and road operators the anticipated cost-efficient benefits associated with embedded cellular technology in vehicles, and synergies between the deployment of cellular base stations and roadside infrastructure.

“We are entering a new era in transportation,” said Greg McKhann, chief operating officer at McCain, Inc. “These types of trials are crucial to assess the impact of connected and autonomous vehicles on advanced mobility, safety, sustainability, and economic prosperity. As an infrastructure partner, McCain will support the project partners to ensure that the new communication technologies are effectively integrated with existing and emerging traffic signal control infrastructure.”

Project representatives from more than 40 companies and organizations recently met to kick off the project to plan how to implement the test; planned for the Interstate 15 express lanes, the southern segment of State Route 125, and local roadways in Chula Vista. Qualcomm Technologies, together with AT&T, Ford, and Nokia, formally announced the project via press release on October 31, 2017. The initial testing phase is slated to begin later this year.
