Gwinnett County Leads Georgia with First Deployment of SWARCO McCain’s Omni
eX® Intersection Control Software and MyCity Adaptive Traffic Technology
Gwinnett County, Georgia

Overview
Gwinnett County aimed to enhance its existing infrastructure with adaptive control by running Omni eX Intersection Control Software on the
third-party 2070 controllers they had been using for the past 10 years.
Location
Gwinnett County, GA is a vibrant suburban community located northeast of Atlanta, just 30 to 40 minutes from downtown. Its proximity makes it a key commuter hub within the metro area. Major highways like I‑85 and I‑985 run through the county, providing direct access to Atlanta and other interstate routes. The area’s heavy reliance on cars and ongoing population growth have led to significant congestion, especially during peak travel times. This rapid growth has brought
about significant traffic challenges.
The Challenge
The population in Gwinnett County has grown rapidly in recent years, surpassing one million residents. With limited options for expanding roadways, implementing an adaptive traffic management system was the most effective solution. Wanting to break from the same approach used over the past decade, the county chose a new path. With funding separate from Georgia DOT, they had the flexibility to try something innovative.
Solution
To modernize its traffic management system, Gwinnett County collaborated with Utilicom and SWARCO McCain to implement Omni eX Intersection Control Software, integrated with MyCity Adaptive. In November 2024, the county entered a contract with a 12-month project timeline covering implementation, performance monitoring, and evaluation. Working closely with Utilicom as the integrator and SWARCO McCain as the technology provider, Gwinnett County successfully deployed Omni eX Intersection Control Software on 11 of their third-party 2070 controllers by April 2025. MyCity Adaptive control was officially activated on May 15, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the project.
The Results
The county was able to successfully deploy an adaptive traffic solution without the need for major investments in new hardware. It marked the first deployment of Omni eX Intersection Control Software and MyCity Adaptive in the state of Georgia, positioning Gwinnett County at the forefront of innovative traffic technology adoption. The system is monitored 24/7, with SWARCO McCain actively managing and fine-tuning the adaptive settings as needed. By offering a solution
compatible with the county’s existing controllers and detection infrastructure, SWARCO McCain minimized the need for costly upgrades. The county also benefited from SWARCO McCain’s highly competitive pricing, industry-leading software capabilities, and the support of experienced team members.
