Overview

As one of the most congested urban areas in the United States, the City of Los Angeles continuously seeks innovative solutions to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and modernize its transportation infrastructure. To address these challenges, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) deployed SWARCO McCain’s state-of-the-art ATC Cabinets.

Location

Los Angeles, the second-most populous city in the United States, is a vast and dynamic metropolis located in Southern California. Renowned for its influential entertainment industry and economic significance, the city features a varied geography that influences its complex infrastructure. Los Angeles is known for its severe traffic congestion, ranking among the worst in the nation. The city’s dependence on automobiles, combined with inadequate public transit coverage, contributes to frequent gridlock on city streets and on freeways.

The Challenge

LADOT aimed to replace outdated cabinets with newer, more efficient Advanced Traffic Controller (ATC) Cabinets. These cabinets adhere to ATC standards, enhancing efficiency and safety and providing greater flexibility and modularity compared to older cabinet types. LADOT was looking for the best ATC Cabinet on the market that could address the complex traffic management issues faced by the city.

Solution

LADOT chose SWARCO McCain as the ATC Cabinet provider, who leads the North American Intelligent Transportation industry in ATC Cabinet deployments. Since 2017, SWARCO McCain has delivered 796 ATC Cabinets, which is one of the largest ATC Cabinet deployments in the United States to date. The agreement called for four different cabinet models, 350i, 352i, 356i, and 357i, each configured to fit the specific needs of each intersection.
