Overview

SWARCO McCain partners with the City of Pasadena, CA, to streamline the city‘s traffic management. Previously, Pasadena faced traffic monitoring and management challenges, as it relied on two different types of controllers operated through two distinct central systems. In an effort to address these challenges, the city transitioned to SWARCO McCain‘s MyCity TMS1 as a unified, innovative, and efficient central management system.

Location

The City of Pasadena is a hub of transportation in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, surrounded by major freeways, including the I-210, SR 134, and SR 110. The city’s transportation network consists of a blend of vehicular, public transit, and pedestrian pathways. The city boasts a diverse population, lively commercial districts, and famous attractions like the Rose Bowl and Caltech.

The Challenge

The City of Pasadena identified the complexities of operating two different traffic controllers, the McCain 170E and the McCain 2070E Controllers, through two central software systems, SWARCO McCain’s QuicNet Pro and Siemens’ iNet. This split system presented several concrete challenges, including difficulties in integrating data, increased operational complexity, delays in response time, and raised security risks. Additionally, a major concern for the city was ensuring communication between the old system and the new central management software during the software upgrade and technical integration of legacy controllers.

Solution

To address the challenges presented by the City of Pasadena, SWARCO McCain deployed MyCity on a new traffic server while integrating and configuring over 310 McCain 170E and McCain 2070E Controllers, including the migration of over 215 locations from the Siemens iNet system. Additionally, timing databases were uploaded, and new intersection maps and graphics were completed. SWARCO McCain also provided field support for software updates,
chip swaps with continuous technical support, and training with a recurring annual maintenance agreement.

Key Benefits of MyCity TMS

  • Facilitated data integration
  • Improved scalability and data security
  • Analyze performance and trends
  • Lowered maintenance and support costs
  • Enhanced monitoring and control efficiency
  • Empowered cloud-based scalability

The Results

The City of Pasadena successfully unified all its traffic controllers into one efficient central traffic management system. MyCity TMS enhanced the city’s transportation network with its robust operational capabilities and cloud-based, easy-to-use software features. Due to the success of this deployment, the City of Pasadena has started shifting to the SWARCO McCain ATC Controller platform.
