SWARCO McCain’s MyCity TMS improves the Province of Ontario’s traffic flow by optimizing citywide signalized intersections.

Overview

SWARCO McCain, in a strategic partnership with Innovative Traffic Solutions, Inc., modernized 500 signalized intersections throughout Ontario by implementing SWARCO MyCity TMS¹. The deployment enhanced management efficiency while preparing the province’s infrastructure for future advancements.

Location

The Province of Ontario’s transportation network, managed by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), covers 5 regions that frequently record road congestion. These regions’ road network consists of major highways, arterial roads, and numerous intersections and features 16,900 kilometers of roads and 2,880 bridges. These road networks also include the highly congested Highway 401 and a range of other highways.

The Challenge

The MTO faced challenges with its legacy central software management system. The system’s limited communication between its existing McCain 170E Controllers and McCain 233 Intersection Control Software, and its central software lacked interoperability with next-generation ATC controllers and cabinets. The MTO required a solution that addressed these challenges while preparing the Province of Ontario’s traffic management infrastructure for future advancements and technologies like the ATC platform.

Solution

In collaboration, SWARCO McCain and Innovative Traffic Solutions, Inc., deployed MyCity TMS throughout 500 signalized intersections in the Province of Ontario. The joint effort resulted in a MyCity configuration that seamlessly integrated with the McCain 233 Intersection Control Software, effectively handling its unique parameters. SWARCO McCain provided tailored training sessions to the MTO’s regional engineers to fully support the transition. Through rigorous testing phases and with the committed support from SWARCO McCain’s software department, MyCity TMS was thoroughly verified on test and production servers, ensuring proper functionality and connectivity across the five regions. SWARCO McCain and Innovative Traffic Solutions, Inc. seamlessly ensured connectivity and functionality across the province’s regional hubs with a three-year maintenance agreement.

The Results

The Ministry now has a modern Traffic Management System that facilitates future smart city initiatives. MyCity TMS will seamlessly allow future Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) upgrade paths to the latest ATC controller standard while continuing to support their legacy 170 controllers.

The MTO selected Innovative Traffic Solutions, Inc., as the successful provider to initiate the supply of the McCain ATC 2070LX controller platform, coupled with the cutting-edge McCain Omni eX^® Intersection Control Software. This deployment marks a tremendous advancement in the province’s traffic management capabilities.
