The City of Sevierville, TN, Chooses SWARCO McCain as the technology solution for intersection and central system management.
Sevierville, Tennessee
Overview
The City of Sevierville, TN, collaborated with SWARCO McCain and Transportation Control Systems to upgrade signal timing as part of an effort to modernize outdated traffic controllers.
Location
Sevierville is located between Asheville, North Carolina, and Knoxville, Tennessee, on Interstate 40 at exit 407 and sits on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains. The city’s estimated population is over 13,000 and it is located just north of Pigeon Forge.
The Challenge
Sevierville welcomes over 18 million visitors annually and depends on advanced transportation technology to ensure an efficient traffic system for all road users. The city’s road network features State Route 56, which becomes US 441 as it passes through downtown, which is a major passageway that often faces heavy congestion. To better manage this, the city identified the need to upgrade and enhance the existing traffic signal system by implementing traffic responsive control over multiple roadways.
Solution
The City of Sevierville applied for Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grants to upgrade traffic signal technology and timings along the shared corridors. In 2017, SWARCO McCain was selected as the technology provider for intersection and central system control, implementing Advanced Transportation Controllers (ATC) with Omni eX® software at intersections that were integrated with the MyCity Traffic Management System (TMS)1. The project included signal retiming and the implementation of a traffic-responsive system using the built-in traffic-responsive command and control features of the MyCity TMS platform. The project began in 2017 and concluded in 2022.
Benefits of MyCity TMS
• Adjust to real-time traffic demand
• Reduce stops, delays, and travel time
• Reduce signal timing engineering efforts and prolong timing effectiveness
• Analyze arterial performance with high-resolution data report
Benefits of Omni eX Intersecton Control Software
• Provides a single solution for any controller/cabinet configuration
• Complies with national industry standards including NEMA, ATC, and NTCIP
• Supports a 16-line screen with simultaneous display of status and menus
• Ensures data accuracy and consistency with built-in data validation
The Results
SWARCO McCain delivered a solution designed to streamline traffic management and reduce the need for extensive traffic control efforts. The project maximized the city’s investment in transportation controllers by introducing remote monitoring and alarm systems for easier maintenance, improving key corridor management to shorten travel times, and enhancing overall traffic flow throughout the city.
