Overview
The City of Petaluma deployed SWARCO McCain’s MyCity Adaptive and MyCity Signal Performance Measures (SPM) at nine intersections, delivering lasting congestion relief and smoother traffic flow supported by complete setup, training, and ongoing maintenance.
Location
Petaluma is a city in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, located in southern Sonoma County. It has a population of around 59,776 and connected by major routes including U.S. Highway 101. The city sits along the Petaluma River, and has downtown corridors with closely spaced intersections and limited parallel routes.
The Challenge
Petaluma’s limited roadway network, with few major corridors, led to persistent congestion that earlier signal timing projects were unable to resolve. The Washington Street corridor was especially difficult to manage due to its close intersection spacing and environmental constraints near the river and rail line. The city required a system that could automatically adjust to changing traffic conditions and enhance traffic flow without the need for frequent manual adjustments.
Solution
SWARCO McCain deployed MyCity Adaptive and MyCity SPM to optimize real-time traffic responsiveness and data-driven performance monitoring. The city already used MyCity Traffic Management System (TMS), McCain 2070LX Controllers, and Omni eX® Intersection Control Software, allowing for seamless integration. The project included two days of onsite activation support, one day of staff training, and continuous maintenance services.
The Results
The project was quickly completed, demonstrating exceptional delivery speed and efficiency. Since implementation, the city has seen a significant reduction in congestion, with no recent public complaints for the first time in years. Thanks to MyCity SPM, city staff can actively track performance and make real-time adjustments to keep traffic moving efficiently.
